You get commissions when you make sales, and you also get a commission when the people you recruit—your downline—also make a sale. You must be passionate about any business or product for it to succeed. Don’t get into anything just for the money. Internet businesses today sell a variety of products, from e-books to candles. Find a product that you love, then consider selling it yourself.

—How much is the initial investment? Are there other costs? Everyone’s heard horror stories of people losing thousands of dollars on Internet-based businesses. Don’t get involved with anything, no matter how enticing, unless you can afford to lose every penny you invest. Your goal may be to make money, but not all businesses succeed. If you’re uncertain about investing hundreds or even thousands of dollars into a business, perhaps you should look for something that requires less up front money.

—How much time does the business require? Most business require several hours a week for them to become successful. Do you have the time to dedicate to your business? Be realistic about how much time you will actually put into your business before making any investment. Talk to people already involved and ask how much time they must work on their business.
