Website Ranking Tips

The more a website gets visited, the more it is easy to find it. It is very convenient to check its popularity by checking its ranking on search engine results regularly and comparing such results over the months.

Whether a page is positioned as one of the ten first on Google or Yahoo! search results or otherwise will depend not only on the number of results listed, but also on the specific keyword combination. That means the page will have position x or y in function of one or another search term used.

In this perspective, you may ask for the criteria that set a website ranking and for the most convenient kind of keywords for a website.

A good ranking position is based particularly upon:

1. how much consistent updated content the site has;

2. how long it has been on line.

This is why a site regularly fed with unique texts related to each other and to its theme will probably rank high on search results. In contrast, of two sites with very similar contents, consistency, and size, the newer one is strongly inclined to have a lower position.

But that is not all. There are further ranking conditions, such as:

1. the choice of keywords for the site tags

2. the number and quality of backlinks to the site.

Each site page should have a title tag tightly linked with its contents. Therefore, by choosing each page title you should consider possible keywords used as search terms. Things aren’t different when you define headings for each page section. They should properly be HTML-encoded as heading tags. Also, each image should have in its HTML code an alt-tag containing a description based on keywords. All keywords used in the title, heading or image tags must be consistent with the site contents and with the HTML metatags.

Choosing optimized keywords involves both these instructions concerning the source code of the website and the number of other pages properly pointing to it. The keywords used in your tags, particularly the title tag, are the most convenient external links to your pages. Avoid using URLs as anchor texts. Furthermore, the best pages containing backlinks to your site are highly ranked ones. A lot of websites usually sell links, and the purchase can be mediated by online service providers.

There are ways other than purchases to get links to your pages. You can promote your website through Google Adwords and similar services, including some free ones. Also, you should regularly write good articles out of your site contents adding a resource box and a link to your site. You can also create completely new articles for that purpose. Anyway, you can regularly have a specific service provider submit your articles automatically to article directories.

Promoting your site also includes posting useful or interesting videos that invite viewers to visit it, as well as showing its link as part of your signature in forum posts, answers, and blog comments. Besides, your site visitors can subscribe to a newsletter, which can in turn be promoted in all the ways presented above. Finally, it can undoubtedly be worth spending some time on Twitter and Facebook.

However, all these ranking-oriented strategies may not work if you choose wrong keywords. Remember to check the competitiveness of each keyword considered. A longstanding site with good content and thousands of good links will beat any other that contains the same keywords but isn’t as competitive in age, contents or backlinks. Investing in becoming more competitive by choosing less competitive keywords – that is surely a solution for a new or small website.

In conclusion, you should check results from different search tests, and also use tools such as Google Keyword Tool, which is a free one, to test possible new search terms for your pages. You should choose less competitive keywords which you can generate and test with the free tool and never lose of sight that a keyword needs to be composed of at least three words.
